Gulmarg
Gulmarg is a town nestled in the Pir Panjal range of the Western Himalayas at an altitude of 8,690 feet above sea level. Literally translated as ‘Meadow of Flowers’ it is encased by glimmering snow peaked alps, verdant green pastures, colorful meadows, deep valleys and pine covered slopes.
A picturesque beauty, it is known for its ski resort which was established in 1927, the Gulmarg Gondola – Asia’s second longest cable car ride and the highest golf course in the world at an elevated altitude of 2,650 meters. Gulmarg is an absolute delight for nature lovers and adventure seekers. Called the ‘heartland of winter sports’, it offers a plethora of activities such as skiing, snowboarding, horse riding, heli-skiing, snow scooter, tobogganing, etc. and sightseeing options. The best season to visit Gulmarg is from October to June as it is the perfect destination especially during winters when the snow capped landscape transforms into the premier destination for winter sports in India.
Pahalgam
Fringed by snow-covered Himalayan peaks, deep valleys and skirted by the gushing glacial Lidder river, the hill station of Pahalgam in Kashmir Valley, is one of nature's benevolent and beatific expressions. Offering much in the way of awe-inspiring sights, this quaint town is located at the confluence of two streams flowing from the pristine Sheshnag lake and the Lidder river. Perched at a height of 2,130 m, Pahalgam's journey from a humble shepherd's village with breathtaking views to a cherished golfing destination, popular across the world, has been exciting.
The huge, undulating meadow of Baisaran, surrounded by thickly wooded pine forests offers a haven for nature lovers. Known for its stunning landscape, Pahalgam has been the location for several Bollywood films, including the superhit Betaab film (1983), after which is named the Betaab Valley!During summer, as soft green grass carpets the meadows, tourists start arriving here, some to soak in nature's bounty and others for a dash of adventure. The nearby Chandanwari glacier point is very popular among trekkers.
Sonamarg
Located at an altitude of 2,740 m, Sonmarg is an ideal stopover for nature lovers who want to enjoy camping in a hill station. Known as the Meadow of Gold, Sonmarg is the gateway to Ladakh and is known for its verdant and picturesque valleys and snow-clad peaks. River Sindh winds its way through the valley and takes care of the flora of the region that include silver birch, fir, pine and alpine flowers. Sonmarg is also the base destination from where the famous Amarnath Yatra starts. If you happen to be in Sonmarg, make sure to visit Vishansar Lake. Around a kilometre long, the lake freezes over in winter and is the source of River Nelum, which flows upward in the northern direction. Another attraction is River Nilagrad, around 6 km from Sonmarg.
A large number of tourists arrive to take a dip in the river, which is red in colour and is said to have medicinal properties. If you happen to be an adventurer at heart, do visit Thajiwas Glacier and hire an ice scooter to experience ice skiing. You can also opt for white water river rafting at Shutkari Bridge. Sonmarg is only accessible during the summer months as winters are cold, harsh and experience heavy snowfall and avalanches. Historically, Sonmarg was the gateway to the ancient silk road along with Gilgit. It connected Tibet with Kashmir. One of the highest passes for road transport, Zoji La Pass is located around 15 km east of this place.
Doodhpathri
Doodhpathri, often referred to as the "Valley of Milk," is a picturesque tourist destination and hill station located in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is situated in the Budgam district of Jammu & Kashmir and offers visitors a serene and breathtaking natural landscape. Here are some key details and highlights about Doodhpathri:
Location: Doodhpathri is located at an altitude of 8,957 feet above sea level, making it a high-altitude destination in the Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayas. It is approximately 42 kilometers away from the state's summer capital, Srinagar, and about 22 kilometers from the district headquarters, Budgam.
Name Origin: The name "Doodhpathri" translates to the "Valley of Milk." The name has a fascinating legend associated with it. According to local lore, the renowned Kashmiri saint Sheikh Noor din Noorani prayed here and miraculously found milk when searching for water in the meadows. The milk turned into water upon his instructions, and the valley came to be known as Doodhpathri.
Milky Waters: The water that flows through the meadows of Doodhpathri has a milky appearance from a distance. It is known for its cold and refreshing quality throughout the year.
Natural Beauty: Doodhpathri is characterized by its sloping grassy landscapes, surrounded by snow-clad mountains. The meadows are adorned with a variety of colorful wildflowers, including daisies, forget-me-nots, and buttercups during the spring and summer months.
Alpine Valley: The valley is situated in a bowl-shaped formation within the Pir Panjal Range. It is enveloped by pristine alpine landscapes, with dense forests of pine, fir, and deodar trees enhancing its natural beauty.
Tosamaidan: The famous Tosamaidan is located to the west of Doodhpathri. It is another stunning meadow that adds to the charm of the region.
